The Buckingham’s buildings were constructed to withstand winds of 110 m.p.h. The hallways were designed as safe havens. The first floor is built up to 66 feet—higher than the 100-year flood plain of 63.8 feet.
Special Evacuation Zone: an SQLC Innovation.
The Buckingham’s parent company, SQLC, conceived the idea of a special Evacuation Zone: a concrete-block construction on a site of structural steel, equipped with an emergency generator. SQLC also created special security points on campus to offer even greater protection. SQLC’s storm-protection features proved themselves in 2008 at The Buckingham, when Hurricane Ike struck with 110 mph winds and higher gusts.
