Coronavirus Updates

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

With a steady number of cases in the Greater Houston area and elsewhere nationwide, we’re thankful for another stable week at The Buckingham.

Most significantly, we continue to have no active resident cases. We do have two COVID-positive team members, one from our culinary team we identified last week, and one from our transportation team. Our culinary team member has received their first negative test, and we’re hopeful a second will follow shortly. The transportation team member is not eligible for their first test until the 16th of this month. Both remain quarantined at home in accordance with our protocols, until a full recovery is made.

Our visitation program has been hugely successful, with more than 1,000 visits since we reopened Independent Living in mid-September and the Plaza in early October. I want to thank all the family members who have been patient, cooperative and respectful of our process. Everyone’s willingness to work with us in all of this has been greatly appreciated and it has been a real pleasure to see this semblance of normalcy again.

One note, for visitors to the Plaza (Memory Care, Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing) we have a more involved visitation process and requirements, much of which is driven by state regulations. Given the specific requirements for visiting the Plaza, we have reached out to the resident’s responsible party to communicate our process for visitation. If you need additional information, please contact me through the Updates link at the end of this note.

On Tuesday, we reopened the Windsor dining room. It has been a big hit! We implemented a number of measures to protect the residents (e.g. limited capacity, ensuring physical distancing, etc.) and it has been wonderful to see residents back in the dining room.  Hopefully, we can open other dining venues in the relative near future. The Plaza dining rooms will remain closed for now in accordance with regulations.

The Thanksgiving holiday is on the horizon and, like many families this year, we too are adjusting what this celebration will look like. The holidays at The Buckingham always included our famous Thanksgiving Brunch. This year, for a small fee, our Dining department is offering a complete Thanksgiving dinner for delivery that includes a whole turkey and all the fixings.     

Residents will be able to welcome two visitors, so they can have a smaller, more intimate dinner in their apartments. Please remember that we do have to limit the number of visitors to two per resident.

For the first time in our nation’s battle with COVID-19, the U.S. recently experienced a rather ignoble milestone of 100,000 new single day cases. That is a stark reminder that the virus is still among us. As we are at The Buckingham, please continue your personal vigilance which includes wearing a mask, handwashing and social distancing. Those all remain our best tools in this fight and will continue to be applied rigorously at The Buckingham.
