Coronavirus Updates

November 13, 2020

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

For the first time, more than 150,000 new cases were reported nationwide on a single day. While we redouble our efforts to continue following responsible policies that balance safety with accessibility, we must temper expectations that this virus has in any way diminished.

In that light, we did have one resident test positive while in the skilled nursing unit.  The good news is this person has received two negatives using the “quick test” format, so we are optimistic about their imminent recovery. However, we will first conduct our standard nasal swab tests to confirm those results. In the interim, the resident will remain quarantined in their apartment.

We also identified four new cases among team members. We currently have five COVID-positive staff – two therapists, a CNA, an LVN, and a member of our transportation team. All these individuals are quarantined at their homes and won’t return to campus until they receive two consecutive negative tests. Thankfully, one individual from our culinary team has fully recovered.

We continue largescale weekly testing of all residents and team members in The Plaza. Due to recent positive tests mentioned above and our interest in taking a cautious approach, we have temporarily stopped all visitation in The Plaza (Memory Care, Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing). We will resume visitation only if negative results are returned and we are satisfied there is no additional risk for the residents or staff.  Visitation in independent living will continue. Again, we fully appreciate your patience and understanding as we take these precautionary measures, and for your continued cooperation with our visitation guidelines.

Thanksgiving is on the horizon and as difficult and challenging as this year has been, there is still much to be thankful for in our lives. We have adjusted our usual celebration in light of the virus. Our dining room will be open for limited seating. Also, for a small fee, our dining department is offering a complete Thanksgiving dinner for delivery to Independent Living residents’ apartments that includes a whole turkey and all the fixings. For the smaller appetites, there is the option for an herb roasted chicken.

There is a limit of two guests per resident. If this is something your family might be interested in, please connect with us at updates@www.buckinghamhouston.com for more information. Residents can contact the dining department directly.

Due to continuing regulations in our licensed areas, residents in The Plaza will enjoy their own individual Thanksgiving meal in the comfort of their apartment.

Finally, and something to be very thankful for, is that we celebrated Veteran’s Day this week.  Again, the usual celebrations were put on hold this year, but hopefully everyone took the  opportunity for quiet moments of reflection in honor of the men and women who’ve served this country with distinction. We are privileged to have many veterans who live and work at The Buckingham. We salute our veterans, and all veterans, for their service, courage and sacrifice.

Take care and stay well.

Executive Director
