Residents March to the Beat of their Own Drums at The Buckingham

If you walk into the fitness room at The Buckingham on Tuesday and Friday mornings, you will catch people drumming to different genres of music. But it’s not just any group of people, they are independent living seniors who call The Buckingham, a premier senior living community, home. The popular class brings out dozens of residents who are reaping the health benefits from the 30-minute fitness class, including Marilyn Dillard.

When Dillard joined the class, she didn’t know what to expect, but now she says it’s one of the best things that has happened since she moved to The Buckingham. During the class, residents are given two drumsticks and while sitting down they move the sticks from one side to the other to the beat of the music. So far, they’ve drummed to country hits, Hawaiian tunes and even Elvis! Dillard says the class is for all residents no matter the stage of life you are in.

“It is such a lighthearted experience and a true benefit of living at The Buckingham,” said Dillard. “I don’t know of any other place that offers a fitness class like this. I enjoy the fact it not only works my body but my mind. The different movements and music really stimulate your brain. Overall, it has improved my mobility, especially my arms, and I’ve made great friends along the way.”

Recent research indicates that drumming accelerates physical healing, boosts the immune system, increases energy, and reduces tension, anxiety, depression, and stress. At The Buckingham, wellness is a key component of the community’s Aspyre comprehensive lifestyle program, which is woven into all aspects of daily living.

“Aspyre focuses on all components of successful aging, including physical fitness, spiritual, intellectual and emotional health,” said Jena Hoofnagle, fitness specialist at The Buckingham. “With this in place, opportunities for wellness become easily tailored to residents’ unique, personal preferences. We see it weekly with our drumming class. It is a fun way for residents to move their arms, work their core all while socializing with other residents. It has become the most popular class at The Buckingham, and I’m excited to see it continue to grow.”
