Top nursing homes, skilled nursing facilities in Houston

The Houston market is home to some of the highest-performing nursing homes and skilled nursing facilities in the state, according to a new report released Oct. 29.

Now in its 10th year, the 2019-2020 U.S. News & World Report’s Best Nursing Homes guide analyzed more than 15,000 nursing homes in nearly 100 metro markets spanning every state. Of those, 1,225 were in Texas, the most of any state.

Almost 3,000 nursing homes earned a U.S. News “Best Nursing Home” designation this year, according to an Oct. 29 press release.

The report rates nursing homes by a few different metrics, including a short-term rehabilitation rating, which assesses the performance of skilled nursing facilities in post-acute care, according to the release. The short-term rehabilitation rating also takes into account several quality measures, including consistency of nursing staff, use of antipsychotic drugs and success in preventing falls. Of the 13,683 facilities that received a short-term rating, only 2,250 nursing homes were designated as “high-performing” in the report.

New to the report this year is a long-term care rating, which includes data on staffing, success in preventing emergency room visits, pneumonia vaccination rates and other metrics. Out of the 13,685 nursing homes that received a long-term care rating, 1,139 were designated as “high-performing” by U.S. News, per the release.

“The inclusion of the new long-term care rating in this year’s Best Nursing Homes guide expands the quality of data-driven decision support for patients, residents and families choosing a nursing facility,” Zach Adams, senior health data analyst at U.S. News, said in the release. “Here at U.S. News, we understand that every person researching a nursing home is looking for qualities specific to their needs. We have updated our methodology to reflect multiple dimensions of care that matter when making this important decision.”
